Every January we tell ourselves the same story: clean slate, new habits, new results. Psychologically, this makes sense. The so-called Temporal Landmark Effect turns the 1st of January into a symbolic cut. It separates the “old me” from the “future me” and briefly reduces guilt about what didn’t work before. The problem: nothing actually changed. Only the narrative did.
That’s why I’ve never been a fan of New Year, New Me. In e-commerce, this thinking shows up everywhere. Big replatforming plans, massive redesigns, aggressive growth targets all justified by the calendar instead of real signals. The year changes, so we assume the business needs a reset too. Often, that leads to overcorrection instead of progress.
Strong brands don’t rely on artificial milestones. They iterate continuously, compound small improvements, and let data rather than dates drive decisions. This edition is about zooming out, questioning the stories we tell ourselves at the start of the year, and focusing on what actually moves the needle long term. No symbolic resets. Just better thinking.
